Before I begin my first book recommendation, I want to take a moment to tell you my hopes for this blog going forward.
I want this to be a place where we can have conversations about the things we all love, stories of all kinds. One thing you won’t see is me shitting on other authors’ work. If I don’t like something I just won’t talk about it. I want to keep this a positive place. The universe knows there’s enough ugliness in the world right now. We don’t need more here.
The plan is to post twice a week, Monday and Friday. Monday will be the subject of the week post, something we can discuss until the next Monday or longer if there’s interest. Friday will be a recommendation, usually books, but sometimes comics or shows or movies.
Okay, with that out of the way, let’s move right into this week’s recommendation.
Last week I finished a science fiction novel by Kristine Kathryn Rusch called Diving the Wreck. It’s the first in her diving series and contains basically three connected novellas. The first two were previously published in I think Asimov’s Magazine. The story follows Boss, a wreck diver who makes her living locating and exploring lost space ships.
During a scouting mission, she stumbles on a rare ship and creates a team to explore it. There’s a lot of great character interactions as they’re assembling and preparing then things really ramp up when they find some legendary technology in the ship.
I don’t want to give too much away. Suffice it to say the book deals with the consequences of Boss’s discovery and the powers that want to take advantage of it.
As a general rule, I prefer more action packed adventures, but the characters are so well done that I didn’t miss the big battles I usually prefer. If you’re into exploration type sci-fi stories, this is one I think you’ll enjoy.
Have any of you read Kris’s books? This is my first and I’m looking forward to reading more. If you’ve read this one, let me know what you thought in the comments. No spoilers, please.
If you prefer more action in your Sci-fi, you can read the first few chapters of my story, Children of Darkness, in the web novel section of this website.
Last but certainly not least I wanted to give a big shout out out to my first Patron. Amanda, you rock. If anyone would like to join Amanda in supporting my work and in the process get a nice discount on my e-books and Merch, you can sign up at www.patreon.com/jamesewisher
Thanks for stopping by and I’ll see you again on Monday.
