The Day – 8-22-20
It was good to get back to my usual schedule yesterday with no distractions. Next week is looking busy so I plan to enjoy the next couple days of calm. After doing some business stuff in the morning, I went to the post office, got nothing interesting, and came home. After lunch I watched the movie Badlands, review to follow. I made it to my writing desk around 2:00 and managed 6 pages, a really good result. I’m writing a particularly interesting section of the new book and the words are coming easily, which is nice.
On a sad note, one of the local senior citizens homes in my area has had a Covid outbreak. Reading about it in the paper is so depressing. I’m not sure what’s worse, the disease or the fact that no one can visit their family members who need them most. I’m so glad no one in my family is in that situation. If you find yourself dealing with this particular problem, please accept my heartfelt wishes for a speedy resolution.
Badlands Review
Now for something a little less depressing. Badlands in a western currently playing on Netflix. The hero is a Pinkerton’s Detective hunting down Confederate war criminals. It has all the usual genre tropes, the quiet hero who’s good with a gun, the strong love interest, and nasty villains. If you’re into westerns, this one hits all the right notes and has plenty of stars, not big stars for the most part, but some good ones.
I’m sure I’ve complained about this before, but I noticed it again in this movie. The bad buys are really stupid. After capturing and beating to a pulp the hero, they don’t just put a bullet in his head. I understand why for plot reasons, but every time I see it, I want to throw the remote through the tv. There’s got to be a better way to let the hero escape.
Anyway, that’s just me nitpicking. This was a good example of a western and gets a recommend from me.
Finally we end with a preorder update. The Portal Thieves is up to 551. Thanks everyone for your support.
Talk to you tomorrow.
