The Day – 10-25-20
Sunday mornings are generally pretty quiet. After finishing my morning business stuff, I took it easy, reading the paper and generally enjoying half a day off. I also made a quick trip to the local candy shop to get a gift for my aunt.
After a nice lunch I watched another episode of The Repair Shop. This time they had a really cool old music box. It was in a house that got blown up in the Blitz during WW2. Every member of the family save a recently married daughter was killed, but some how the music box survived. Pretty crazy when you think about it.
The other items were interesting, but didn’t hold a candle to the music box. There was an old stuffed animal and a pair of fireplace tongs from the 1800s.
After the show I made it to my writing desk. I didn’t get immediately to work and instead uploaded The Portal War’s Audiobook to the various retailers. The took two hours.
Around 3:00 I finally got to work but only managed 2 pages. There’s something about the last book of a series that seems to slow me down. I don’t know exactly what it is, but it’s definitely happening with this book.
The Saga Of Tanya The Evil Vol 1 Review
So I finally finished the first book of the series. I’m not going to lie. When I reached a third of the way through the book, I would have sworn there was no way I’d read the rest of the series. But, happily, it got better. The last quarter was especially enjoyable and I already ordered the rest of the series.
Basically, the story follows a Japanese office worker who gets killed and reincarnated into the body of a little girl. The reason this happens to him is that at the moment of his death, God speaks to him. He claims not believe in God, which understandably annoys the deity. Being reincarnated as Tanya is his punishment. God, which our hero calls Being X, also plans to use the situation to teach him faith. This guy has a horribly cynical personality. He tends to view people as useful tools or shields. He is absolutely determined to deny Being X what it wants.
What threw me off was the POV character’s tendency to think about the little girl as if she’s a separate person and not really him. He doesn’t do it so much later on which is probably why I enjoyed it more.
The setting is an alternate history version of Europe during WW1 that has magic. The author has done a fine job recreating the war while adding in the magical elements.
Eventually Tanya gains a powerful magical artifact that makes her the strongest mage on the battlefield. The problem is, she has to pray to Being X to get it to work. She hates it but the power is too useful to refuse. She’s determined to survive the war at all cost, even giving in a fraction to her hated enemy.
I won’t give away too many details, but if you can get past the halfway point, I think you’ll enjoy the book. It gets a recommend from me.
Finally a preorder update. The Master of Magic is up to 969. Thanks everyone for your support.
Talk to you tomorrow.
