Let's Talk Castlevania - James E. Wisher

Let’s Talk Castlevania

The Day – 10-4-20

Yet another quiet day. I watched a movie in the morning, had a nice lunch, and made it to my writing desk around 1:00. I managed a solid 6 pages which is my best effort so far on this book. I’ve got a pretty solid handle now on the first part of the story. That should help with my word count, at least until I get stuck again.

On a side note. Getting stuck is one of the aspects of writing that most surprised me. Before I started writing professionally, I suppose you’d call it, I figured the process would be much smoother than it really is. After five years, I’ve gotten used to the ups and downs, but for anyone thinking about doing this for a living, be ready for it.

Castlevania, Games into Cartoons

I have no idea how many of you are gamers, but when I was a kid, I used to love platform games like Super Mario Brothers, Ghosts and Goblins, and, of course, Castlevania. Basically you played a monster hunter named Belmont who had a magic whip. You could collect various power ups as you went. It was a pretty fun, if standard, entry into the genre.

Fast forward to a few years ago. Netflix comes out with an anime based on the game and written by an outstanding comic book writer named Warren Ellis. I’ve watched a number of Netflix original anime series and this is my favorite. There are currently three seasons with hopefully more to come.

The first season follows Trevor Belmont, the last member of his family of great monster hunters. He’s currently a drunk wondering the countryside, aimless and depressed. Meanwhile Dracula human wife is burned by the church driving the vampire insane. He decides to kill every human in the world. Belmont joins forces with a gypsy wizard to wake a legendary warrior who’s supposed to stop Dracula. That turns out to be the half-vampire Alucard.

The second seasons sees the three heroes fighting monsters, gaining information, and finally taking on Dracula himself. They win, though mostly because the vampire is sick of living.

The third season finds Belmont and the wizard traveling together. They end up in a small town with a cult trying to resurrect Dracula. They investigate and eventually stop them.

If you haven’t watched the show yet it gets a strong recommend from me.

We end as always with a preorder update. The Portal Thieves is up to 1,355 with 4 days to go. Thanks everyone for your support.

Talk to you tomorrow.
