The Day – 5-15-20

Wait until I tell you what happened yesterday. The day started off dark and gloomy. I get a phone call from the power company. Due to the virus, as I understood it, they’re not going to be checking electric meters anymore. So if you don’t want to pay based on an estimate, you need to read the meter yourself and report the result on their website.

Simple enough you’re thinking and maybe it is for people with new, digital meters, it is, but my meter is nearly thirty years old and uses dials, eight of them, thank you very much.

So first I go out and write down the numbers on the black dials since that’s what it shows on the website. Now after thirty years, the plastic covering over the dials has gotten foggy and scratched so seeing through it is like peering through muddy water. Next, if the arrow is between numbers you’re supposed to use the lower number, but if it’s really close but not quite touching I figure I use the closer number.

After a good deal of swearing and wiping the plastic in hopes of a clearer view, I finally get the four number I need. At least I’m pretty sure I do.

Back inside to my office and on to the power company website. I put in the numbers and scroll up. Wouldn’t you know there’s another line wanting the numbers off the red dials. Back out I go, more swearing ensues, but I get those numbers as well, put them in along with the date and click enter.

Now I wait until the bill comes and I find out if I did it right or if I’m going to get a massive bill. Fingers crossed.

After that mess I got to writing. Managed 5 pages for the day. Not bad.

Finally we end with some good news. Preorders hit 190. With any luck another day will get it to 200. Thanks to everyone that’s ordered so far.

Talk to you tomorrow.
