Subject of the Week 2 - James E. Wisher

Subject of the Week 2

Hello Everyone,

If you read Friday’s book review then you’ve probably guessed what today’s subject of the week is going to be.

That’s right, we’re talking about shared worlds in fiction. I suppose I should make sure I’m clear about my definition of a shared world. It’s one where multiple authors write books set in the universe but not using the same characters.

I’ll start.

My favorite is the Forgotten Realms. I started reading Forgotten Realms books in high school, about the same time I got into D&D. I loved the early stuff. The Drizzt books were my favorite. thought to be fair I liked pretty much everything up until they changed the magic system in match D&D 4.0 rules. And it wasn’t just that. The feel of the books seemed to change. It felt like they stopped being fun adventures. The books got longer, but less interesting, at least to me.

Despite that, I will always have fond memories of devouring paperbacks in math class when I was supposed to learning algebra. I know, a writer that sucks at math, what a concept.

In the 90’s and 00’s I read everything dungeons and dragons related I could get my hands on, realms books, Dragonlance, that weird one set in a desert world, Dark Sun I think the name was, I even read a few Spelljammer books. I fear my grades may have suffered for my reading habit, though I never outright failed a class.

I’ll throw it over to you now. What’s your favorite shared world?
