The Day – 6-29-20

Well, we’ve gone from heat wave and drought to cool and rainy. Which is fine. At least my lawn in green again. I had a pretty quiet day yesterday, no unexpected trips. I watched a movie, a Chuck Norris beat’em up from the eighties. I’ll talk more about that below. After lunch, I made it to my writing desk and managed 6 pages. One more good week I think will see the first draft done.

A quick update. I’ve uploaded the preorder for the third and fourth novels in The Portal Wars Saga. All the links save Apple Books are up on the their pages if you want to take a look.

Now for the movie. The title is Invasion U.S.A. It’s pretty typical for an eighties action movie. Lots of gun play and explosions. The plot is simple. This Russian agent sneaks a bunch of terrorists into the country and they go on a killing spree, often disguised as cops or soldiers to turn the people against those trying to protect them. Of course the lone hero is the only one that can stop the evil Russian. Which, spoiler alert, he does.

Now, the idea of critiquing the plot of one of these action movies is silly, but there’s one scene I just can’t let pass. The villain is terrified of the hero and decides to go get him before he can ruin his plot. About twenty guys come to his cabin in the swamp, kill his best friend, and blow the place up. Chuck dives out the back window at the last second. He ends up stunned but largely unscathed. And do you know what the villains do instead of taking two minutes to walk around and put a bullet in his dazed head? They leave. No one even checks to see if he’s actually dead.

As far as I can tell the only reason the bad guys didn’t win is sheer laziness. Not particularly good writing, but that wasn’t really the point of movie.

Anyway, time of a preorder update. We’re up to 289 preorders on The Great Northern War. Thanks everyone for your support.

Talk to you tomorrow.
