April 21st Newsletter

Hello everyone,

So there are three words that strike deeply into the heart of an author, Did Not Finish. There’s nothing worse than having someone say they made it a few chapters into your book and quit.

I’m not sure what made me think of that the other day, but I decided it would be a fun topic to discuss.

Here’s the question. Name a book that you were super excited about, absolutely sure you were going to love, and when you got it, you quit part way through.

I’ll start. For me it was Master and Commander by Patrick O’Brian. This is the book that the Russel Crowe movie of the same name is supposed to be based on.

It is so boring. I made in 80 pages and had to quit to save my sanity. So many tedious details it made my eyes glaze over.

Now your turn. Reply and let me know about your biggest disappointment.

You can also pop over to the Discord Server and chat about it there. Link below. I plan to post the same question in the Books channel.

A couple of quick reminders.

The link to my newest book is below.

  1. The book that stands out for me as “did not finish “. Oathbringer #3 in the Stormlight Archive . I was nearly rabid to continue the series at the time , however, There was such a swing as to character motivations and flaws , characters I had grown to like and who had been built up as better than average , suddenly their flaws were not just being seen but really brought to the forefront, I found I just didn’t want to see these characters I’d grown to like torn down and haven’t picked the series up since .

  2. For me it was the Priory of the Orange by Samantha Shannon. I stopped when the Queen who just lost her husband and unborn child in a violent attack slept with her chambermaid. Stomach still swollen from having just been heavily pregnant as well as bruised and battered from the attack. Come on, seriously? So, so far off the vibe.
